This recipe uses cupboard staples and costs under £4 to feed a family of four.
Instructions

1Dice the onion and finely chop the garlic.

2Sauté the onion in a large deep pan with a little oil over medium heat until soft.

3Add the garlic and cook for another minute.

4Pour in the chopped tomatoes, cream, and dried basil. Stir well.

5Add the pasta and enough water to just cover it.

6Simmer for 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender.

7Stir in the grated cheddar and season with salt and pepper.

8Serve hot with extra cheese on top if desired.
