1Rinse the lentils well and tip them into the slow cooker.

2Add the chopped onion, garlic, grated ginger, chopped tomatoes, crumbled stock cubes and all the spices.

3Pour in enough water to cover the lentils by a couple of centimetres, then stir well.

4Put the lid on and cook on Low for 6 hours until the lentils are soft and collapsed and the dal is thick.

5Season with salt, stir well and serve with rice or warm bread.
