The recipe

    Rinse the lentils well and tip them into the slow cooker.
  2. 2
    Add the chopped onion, garlic, grated ginger, chopped tomatoes, crumbled stock cubes and all the spices.
  3. 3
    Pour in enough water to cover the lentils by a couple of centimetres, then stir well.
  4. 4
    Put the lid on and cook on Low for 6 hours until the lentils are soft and collapsed and the dal is thick.
  5. 5
    Season with salt, stir well and serve with rice or warm bread.
