1Heat the oven to 200C (180C fan). Soften the butter and beat in the crushed garlic, finely chopped parsley and a pinch of salt.

2Cut the loaf into thick slices, almost all the way through but keeping the base intact so it stays together.

3Spread the garlic butter generously into each cut, then scatter the grated cheese over the top.

4Wrap loosely in foil and bake for 8 minutes, then open the foil and bake for a further 3-4 minutes until crisp, golden and bubbling.

5Pull the slices apart and serve hot.
