1Rinse the lentils and tip them into the slow cooker with the chopped bacon, onion, carrot, celery and garlic.

2Add the crumbled stock cubes and thyme, then pour in enough water to cover everything by a few centimetres.

3Put the lid on and cook on Low for 8 hours until the lentils are completely soft.

4Stir in the peas and cook for a further 20 minutes on High until heated through.

5Blend about half the soup for a thick, smooth finish, then check the bacon is cooked through, season and serve.
