A thick, old-fashioned pea and ham soup, costed to the penny and cooked slow until smooth. A little bacon flavours the whole pot for next to nothing.

The recipe

    Rinse the lentils and tip them into the slow cooker with the chopped bacon, onion, carrot, celery and garlic.
  2. 2
    Add the crumbled stock cubes and thyme, then pour in enough water to cover everything by a few centimetres.
  3. 3
    Put the lid on and cook on Low for 8 hours until the lentils are completely soft.
  4. 4
    Stir in the peas and cook for a further 20 minutes on High until heated through.
  5. 5
    Blend about half the soup for a thick, smooth finish, then check the bacon is cooked through, season and serve.
