Gamja jorim, baby potatoes braised in a sweet, glossy soy sauce until sticky and tender. A humble, cheap Korean side that's brilliant as a light meal over rice.

Korean Soy Braised Potatoes

The recipe

    Cook the rice in boiling water until tender, then drain and keep warm.
  2. 2
    Cut the potatoes into bite-sized chunks and simmer in a pan of water for 8 minutes until just tender, then drain.
  3. 3
    Return the potatoes to the pan with the soy sauce, honey, crushed garlic and 150ml water and simmer for 12-15 minutes, stirring, until the potatoes are cooked through and the sauce is thick and glossy.

    Stir through the sesame oil so everything turns shiny.
  5. 5
    Scatter with sesame seeds and sliced spring onion and serve with the rice.
