    Melt the butter with the oil in a large pan and cook the sliced onion gently for 5 minutes.

    Add the shredded cabbage, garlic and caraway and cook over a medium heat for 15-18 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden at the edges.

    Meanwhile cook the noodles in boiling salted water until just tender, then drain, saving a splash of the water.

    Tip the drained noodles into the cabbage, add the reserved water and toss everything together over the heat for 2 minutes.

    Season well with the salt and pepper and serve hot.
